RESIDENCY EXPERIENCES 2020

A note about the 2020 experiences

In early 2020, the Village Canoe Residency and Exhibition planning was put on hold. This was due in part because of the restrictions and unknowns from the global pandemic covid-19, and also because the 2019 experience needed some changes and re-thinking that we hadn’t been able to attend to before covid-19 set in. Fortunately, with the award of a grant from the Public Art Learning Fund administered by the New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA), new ideas surfaced and developed after digging into the Public Art component to the Village Canoe, through a weekly directed study over the course of three months with artist Harrell Fletcher, in Portland, OR. Two new ideas came to bear: the Village Canoe Remote Residency Kit “(VCRRKIT”) and the Half-Day Floating Residency. Both of these concepts provide additional framework for programming, looking into the future, and reflecting on the dynamism of the 2019 Residency and Exhibition experiences.

There was a conceptual framework that caused [me] to have a different mindset that is activated by the prompt itself. So I think that’s the sort of beauty of it. It is something that lots of people do already; but by by reframing it, you get them to experience a normal thing–a little bit differently.
