Winter Canoe Build 08: Collar ties

October 23, 2020 - Belfast, ME

Although no end-walls were constructed yet, and our shed is in the woods and mostly out of the wind, it became clear that after three rounds of resurrections, the “meat” of the connection points at the top of each bow was wearing thin. I remember what I saw at João Bentes’ (Break the Anchor) shed at the Apprenticeshop in Rockland, ME, and reached out, as he has been a loyal advisor and friend throughout the past year of the Village Canoe. He recommended collar ties, as in roof construction in homes, which is what he employed in his 50-foot shed at the start of this year. I would have to get to work. I bought some plywood and got to work with this highly-accurate imaging technique, pictured below.
